Here you are, at an important crossroads in your life. All paths lead to uncertain futures. Which path will you choose? Or which will you be forced into? Any way you turn, divorce is probably the last word that you want to hear at this point. It is a disagreeable subject to all but the most cynical or jaded. At the same time, you are here, trying to save your marriage from divorce. You marriage is in crisis, so it is time to do something about it. Let's get started.
Here are some steps that have been proven to work to help improve any marriage:
1. Identify the Problems in Your Marriage
What is going wrong in your marriage in the first place? Try to get right to the root of the problem. Things like arguments may be a symptom of something deeper for example. Are you not spending enough intimate time together? Has life become too hectic? It is important to identify where your marriage has gone off track. When you got married you were deeply in love, and that love has not died. It just needs a bit of help.
2. Start Working to Correct the Problems in Your Marriage
Of course the way that you solve your problems is dependent on what those problems actually are; yet there are some important things to remember regardless of the major and minor problems in your marriage. For example, fighting, bickering, and blaming your spouse about and for (causing) the problem will only bring about greater problems in your marriage. In order to prevent your marriage from ending in divorce you have to be sure to treat your spouse (and they vice versa) fairly and with love.
3. Emphasize Being Happy in Your Marriage
If you seriously do not want to get a divorce, then you have got to make sure that your marriage is 'worth' saving. That is not to say anything about what I think about it, or anyone else for that matter. The point is that if you and your partner are not happy (especially when you are together) then you have some work to do. Ideally the best time that you have should be in the company of your spouse. You know how that feels, but you need to bring it back if it has been lost.
4. Be There for Your Partner
Your partner needs you right now. As much as you are hurt by everything that is going on, so is your spouse. 'Being there for' him or her includes everything from keeping your commitments, whether that is a dinner date per week or a present on the anniversary, to being open, honest and supportive of your partner. Now, I know that seems vast. That is because it is. Trust and reliability are a lot bigger than we often think. If you are serious about saving your marriage from divorce, however, you need to be reliable for your spouse.
There is a lot going on in your life right now. You may even feel at times that you don't know which direction is up. You have it within your power to make your life better. The decisions that you make to do so are entirely up to you, but they will effect the rest of your life.
