Using Movies to Help Save Your Marriage - Poetry, Sex, and Getting Your Marriage Back on Track

Just about every film nowadays (is that word even still used? nowadays.) has a plot of romance and love. Divorce sometimes pops its head into the picture, but usually everything works out for the best for everyone. Hey there is no problem with that. You are here because you want to help saving your marriage from divorce, so you deserve a reprieve via the wonderful world of film. A sad film is alright to throw into the mix, but we probably would not feel that great if there was not a surplus of deliciously cheesy films.

Let's start with a real crowd pleaser: Till Human Voices Wake Us. Hold on a minute... was I the only person who watched that film, let alone the only person who enjoyed it? Alas the title is taken from one of my favourite poems The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock by T.S. Eliot. That is not a huge selling point for most people. Anyway, in this film the protagonist spends the duration of the film, not to mention his life, trying to overcome a haunting event in his past.

That's just it. Many of us spend a great deal of our lives paying for decisions made by ourselves or others, more often it seems by others. We need to reconcile ourselves with the past and begin to heal for the pain and loss that we have felt.

Kinsey, now here is an interesting film! This allows us to delve into the touchy subject of sex life, without talking about it directly. That will save us all from going red. Magnificent! Lookup Kinsey, the man, on Wikipedia and you will get the drift. This film follows the psychologist's journey from fidelity to infidelity to love to sex and the systematic consideration of these things through his famous studies. The bottom line is that people want to have fun in the bedroom. Hey I am not saying that anything goes or that you are not having fun in there. Don't put words in my mouth now. I am merely saying that sex life is one of the biggest and most commonly reported problems in marriages, and it deserves your consideration. That is about all we can say without getting into awkward territory.

Let's move on then, shall we...

In Fun with Dick and Jane the lead couple goes through some difficult times together. They really experience a tight squeeze because of money. Nonetheless, they find a way to work through it. Alright, it is a comedy and it is not terribly deep, but that does not mean that we cannot reflect on deeper matters. The truth is that one of the leading causes of marital stress is money. If you want to save your marriage you need to effectively manage the place of money and work in your life and marriage. Marriage, your relationship, your spouse can spend the duration in the back seat. Catch my drift?

Romeo and Juliet - Don't go doing anything too drastic now! These two were impulsive and ultimately consumed by their love. You can save your marriage without looking up to them for guidance!

Next up we have: A Very Long Engagement. Now this is it. This is what we are all looking for... in a way. The characters in this film Matilde and Manech have a rich and profound love for one another. They are torn apart by war, but Matilde never gives up on their love. I say to my darling whenever we watch this, that our love is like that. It is strong and even too strong. The fact of the matter is that love is important but it is not the only thing that matters. I am happy for you if you have felt like Matilde and Manech, and if you still do. Remember though, that marriage matters too and there are other things that are just as integral to a happy marriage as love. Things like companionship, compatibility, shared joy are perhaps as important as love in keeping your marriage afloat. This realization can help save your marriage.

I hope this article has provided you with some insight without getting too grim at the same time. We are neither the slaves to nor the results of our circumstances. We have some agency, and you have a great deal of power over your life, even if you have not realized this fully. You have the power to change your marriage for the better if you want to.
