Having Communication Problems? Get the Right Help

"We are having communication problems," the caller lamented. "We have been fighting ever since our honeymoon one year ago. Neither of us feels heard or understood by the other. We love each other, but we just can not communicate." As a marital therapist, the most common complaint I hear from couples who contact me for help is communication problems. In the early years of my practice, I used to invite distressed couples to come in and let me teach them more effective communication skills. Now, I know better.

What have I learned?

Insight: Most distressed couples are too distressed to make good use of communication skills training. Yet that's where many therapists start with distressed couples: trying to teach them how to communicate better. It's a mistake. The partners are so angry that they just use their new communication skills to beat up on each other all the more. Their fights get worse! Later on after their distress has been alleviated and anger has abated, learning to communicate better may help, but not at the start. Numerous research studies show a high failure rate for communication skills training when use to treat distressed couples, yet this continues to be the treatment of choice for many therapists. Tip: If you're in relationship distress and a therapist you call wants to teach you communication skills, find another therapist.

2. For most distressed couples, communication skills training misses the mark.

It doesn't address the real issue. It's kind of like putting a band aid on an infected wound. The band aid won't cure the underlying infection. Couple communication problems, though real, are usually a symptom of something deeper: a breakdown in the bond, or emotional connectedness, between two spouses. Because of this loss of closeness, the sense of safety and security in the relationship has gone out the window. Neither partner trusts the other to be genuinely concerned about his or her welfare. If neither partner trusts the other, then what good are communication skills? No wonder many distressed couples who are taught communication skills go home and keep right on fighting. Until the broken bond is repaired and trust is restored, communication skills training probably won't help. Tip: If your relationship is in distress and you're having communication problems, start by focusing on repairing your broken bond, not on learning new communication skills. Ask: "What's happened to our closeness? What's happened to our trust? What can we do?"

3. Insight: When it comes to repairing broken bonds, many relationship experts agree that the most effective therapy approach is Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT).

This is a revolutionary approach that helps distressed couples get back their closeness and trust. When they do, distress is alleviated, anger decreases, and communication automatically improves. More than 25 years of research shows that with EFT, 75% of distressed couples recover completely and another 15% improve significantly. In other words, 90% get better! At two years follow up, almost all have retained their gains. I'm the first therapist in our seven-state Rocky Mountain Region to become fully trained and certified in EFT. I've had more experience using this approach to help distressed couples than any other therapist in our part of the country. Tip: If your marriage is in distress and you're experiencing communication problems, find an EFT therapist.

With EFT, you'll repair your broken bond and regain your closeness and trust. Then, you'll communicate a lot better and fight a lot less.

Christian Sex and Sexual Happiness Increased by Good Communication

In this study of Christian Sex, we will study re-learning how to be in love and fall in love with the person of your dreams by improving communication. In foreplay, the role of communication is to further stimulate your spouse to a point of high arousal.

The more you are exposed to something, the more you show favoritism towards it and develop different biases towards it; but as that happens - you begin to get familiar with it to a point that it no longer holds its full value. It is true for many things in life, and it's especially important for anyone in a Christian marriage who wants to have better Christian sex.

And you therefore show less excitement or interest in sexual intimacy in your Christian marriage, as you normally would. That's why it's so critical to keep good communication in your marriage if you plan to enjoy powerful Christian sex.

It would be great if you could devote all your time to your lover and explore the world with her and whisk off into the sunlight at the drop of a hat. But...that's unlikely. It's good to give genuine compliments, because your compliment satisfies one of our basic human needs. But there are also a few of things you want to avoid while setting the mood with foreplay:

The typical dangling conversation starters

? How was your day?
? What's For Dinner?
? How Do You Feel?

While you are setting the mood for Christian Sex and intimacy, the conversation has to lead to some type of purpose. You are aiming to create a new mood and a new zone of happiness. If you are trying to set the mood then the last thing you want to do is recreate the day - whether it was good or bad. Instead, your conversation will be more effective if it revolves around more intense and purposeful questions like:

? What really turns you on?
? How does it make you feel when I touch you?
? What is your fantasy?

What people want is that exciting kind of nervous feeling in the pit of their stomach when they look into their lover's eyes. What you want is to recreate that feeling of "the first time."

And one way to do that is by having powerful, meaningful ways of engaging in conversation that refreshes the entire atmosphere. Talking about your average day, probably won't be as exciting as talking about something that's new for both of you. If you think this won't have an affect on the way you have sex in your Christian Marriage, think again.

Christian Sex is affected by the moods you create with each other. And since you have to deal with life and the exposures to all it has to offer - it's important to keep an engaged, upward-inflection tone in your marriage if you want to increase the opportunities to enjoy Christian Sex and lovemaking. Otherwise your attraction to your lover will have it's up and downs, and eventually get stuck in a rut.

There are days where wives will feel that spending time with husband is extremely important, but on other days - he just has to wait until tomorrow. Likewise, there are days where Husbands will feel the wife is waiting on the bed with the Victoria Secret lingerie on... but the husband can't mentally focus on her long enough to meet her needs because the quarter reports are due next week.

Spark up your conversation and begin enjoying and relaxing in a full night of romance, pleasure, and sexual satisfaction. Just remember that the law of familiarity bites us all at some point, on some level and ultimate affects a significant part of our existence... but only if you allow it. Don't let it get in the way of enjoying powerful sex in your Christian Marriage.

Improve Communication

Good communication skills are essential for a long and happy marriage. Thankfully, it’s easy to improve communication if you focus on it as a couple. The first step to healthy communication is managing your expectations of marriage. Often, newlyweds expect their husband or wife to be mind readers, who know exactly what they are thinking. No one can pull off such a trick. You have to tell people how you feel and what you need and want.

Also, your partner will not become a different person just because you got married. “People think that magically the person will be the way they want them to be and not how they are,” says Nora J. Baladerian, a psychologist in West Los Angeles.

Once you have accepted that your husband or wife will never read your mind and he or she probably won’t change much, then you can start discussing everything from the mundane (“I wish you would help me around the house more.”) to the serious (“I would like to start having children, but I’m not sure if you’re ready.”)

To have these discussions, you must arm yourself with strategies for talking about anything without offending, hurting, or angering the person with whom you’re speaking. Honestly, good communication skills don’t just work for marriage. They can also come in handy in other relationships, including those with your extended family and co-workers.

Here are the skills you need to build your communication toolbox and help your marriage:

Eliminate all distractions.

Since there is no place for distractions when trying to communicate well, you should shut off all phones, TVs, etc.

Learn to listen.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that to be a good communicator, you must be a good talker. Actually, you should be listening more than talking. And listening is more than just keeping your ears clean, so the noise comes through. You have to really pay attention to what the other person is saying.

An exercise that may help you improve your ability to listen, says Baladerian, is to allow your husband or wife to speak for five minutes without interruption and then repeat what he or she said. Then, have him or her correct you if necessary – say, for instance, you are misinterpreting or getting facts wrong. He or she should keep saying what was said and having you repeat it until you get it right. Then, you can switch places, so that you take the place of the talker and he or she the repeater. Baladerian estimates that the exercise initially takes about 30 minutes.

Consider the other person’s feelings.

“You must put yourself in the other’s shoes,” says Sandra Levy Ceren, a psychologist in DelMar, Calif., who adds that any relationship should be looked at as a learning experience. You are constantly getting to know one another, and you each have different family backgrounds, experiences, values, and expectations that shape who you are. Instead of getting disappointed or angry when your spouse doesn’t automatically meet your needs, try to understand where he or she is coming from.

This is easier written than done. Ceren suggests finding an objective third party to help you break down your differences to better understand each other’s point of view. Objective people are not usually relatives. It’s best to consider professional counselors, religious leaders, psychologists, etc. If you feel like you need professional help to communicate better, make an appointment sooner rather than later. “It’s like a plumbing problem,” says Baladerian. “Don’t wait until the house is flooded.”

Create a plan for broaching difficult topics.

Marriage can get ugly. Sometimes you have to talk about difficult subjects, including infertility, in-laws, money, and death, just to name a few. Baladerian suggests prefacing conversations about tough issues with something like the following: “I have something to say, but it’s scary because I’m afraid you’re going to be upset. But I hope you’ll be proud of me for telling you.”
